DCHS takes early lead in WAC golf standings
GARDEN CITY — The Dodge City High boys golf team dominated play for the second time with five players in the top eight at the Garden City Invitational.
The Red Demons won the tournament after shooting 316 as a team, 21 strokes better than runner-up Hutchinson. Hays finished third as a team with 339, followed by Derby (342) and Maize (344).
"We have been working hard and this group has one more year of experience to draw upon," said DCHS golf head coach Jim Mapel.
Brad Hutton finished second in a playoff after tying Maize's Kale Reynolds with a 78. Brayden Winans was third and Zach Kirby finished fifth after both shot 79 with Ben Hargrave of Salina South.
Levi Bone finished sixth at 80 and Zach Norton was eighth at 81.
Jace Larson closed out the scoring with an 84.
The tournament was the first of five tournaments for each of the Western Athletic Conference schools.
Dodge City scored five points as a team and Red Demons occupy the top five positions in the individual standings.
Hays was second with their score and earned four points, with Garden City and Great Bend tying for third in the league with 367 for 2.5 points, and Liberal shot 382 to earn one point in the team league standings.
Hutton leads the individual standings with 15 points (for first place), with Kirby and Winans tied for second at 13.5, Bone in fourth with 12, Norton in fifth with 11 and Larson tied for seventh with 8.5.
The Red Demons' next tournament in April 15 at Hays.
