  • Ford County Commissioners approved an increase to the landfill fees Monday.
"After reviewing a study conducted last month, commissioners approved an increase of one dollar for every ton of waste dumped," County Administrator Ed Elam said.
According to Elam, .50 cents of that dollar will go towards closure and post closure costs, and .50 cents will go towards operational costs.
"Per person, the new cost will only be about $3.94 a year," Elam said. "The study found that the average person disposes of about 6.35 pounds of waste a day, multiplied by 365 days in a year equals one ton of waste per person."
The county is beginning Phase IV of the landfill.
    In other business, the commission:
    • Held a work session to discuss scheduling of events at Western State Bank Expo Center. According to Elam, there are several events being held close together at the Expo Center in the coming months. Commissioners discussed how to accommodate all activities and be able to set up and tear down as quickly as possible. No action was taken, but Elam said the discussion will continue in the future.
    • Approved the Santa Fe Trail Community Corrections comprehensive plan for 2014. This is a plan the facility must submit each year outlining their guidelines and objectives for the year.
    • Approved for bids the relocation of the Mulberry Creek Bridge. The bridge was originally going to be demolished but thanks to interest from several local individuals and organizations, the commission reexamined their options and have decided to move the bridge to a new location.
According to Elam, they are still in the beginning stages of this process, and don't know where the bridge should be moved to yet. At this time the commission is getting bids on the job.
The next County Commission meeting will be held May 29.
