  • The Dodge City Lady Conquistadors closed out their home and regional regular season schedule Tuesday with a bombardment against Cloud County pitching in a doubleheader sweep at Legends Park.
The Lady Conqs won the first game 8-5 and hit seven home runs in the second game to come from behind to beat the Lady Thunderbirds 11-9 to complete the sweep.
"I like it that we win, but I wish we would quit having to come from behind," joked DCCC head coach Howie Smith. "That's been our staple where we come back from behind all year and that's what we do."
The sweep gave the Lady Conqs (21-18, 17-13) a clinch of home field advantage in the first round three-game series of the regional tournament that starts April 26. Dodge City will be the sixth or seventh seed in the regional — depending on how Hesston does in their final six regionals games they play this week — and could host either Cloud County or Brown Mackie, both with 12-18 records.
Brandy Huff hit a three-run home run to push Dodge City ahead to key the six-run sixth inning and Danielle Klassen followed that with a solo shot to make the score 11-7. The Lady T-Birds tried to rally in the seventh, but fell two runs short in suffering being swept on the road.
Other Dodge City players who hit home runs in the nightcap include Makenzie Maes, Amanda Best, Taylee Heckman, Ashley Stephenson and Makenzy Payne.
"For three innings, I don't think we had a quality at-bat; and then we swing the bat like we do best where we accelerate our hands through the zone and swung at good pitches. It's the capabilities of what we can be doing and that's what frustrates me as a coach.
"The ball was jumping off the bat when we do things right."
The first game saw the Lady Conqs pull ahead 6-2 after four innings of play as they never fell behind after giving up a run in the top of the first to the Lady T-Birds (14-18, 12-18).
Brandy Huff had three RBIs in the first game to lead the Lady Conqs, while Stephenson went 3-for-3 with a double. Taylee Heckman also went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
The final regular season games of the season for the Lady Conqs is a non-regional contest at Garden City. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
