In the first half of April, the Crisis Center of Dodge City has already helped 42 women, children and men from Ford, Gray, Hodgeman, Clark and Meade counties start their lives over after domestic abuse and sexual assault.
"We would like to thank the community for their response to our recent wish list," Joanna Zimmerman, executive director of the Crisis Center said in a recent press release. "The response was heartwarming and truly reflects the giving hearts of those who call southwest Kansas their home."
Families served by the Crisis Center were appreciative and have already taken advantage of the items donated.
In addition to more wish list items, the Crisis Center is also in need of volunteers.
"We are beginning a new volunteer program with upcoming training in May," Zimmerman said. "The exact time and date have not been set yet, but it will probably be on a weekend."
Training is necessary for Crisis Center volunteers, so they can work 'hands on' with the families.
Volunteer opportunities include childcare/play, working with donations, taking hotline calls, staffing the shelter, transporting clients, CO-facilitating support groups, fundraising, office assistance, grocery shopping and more.
For more information, or to fill out an application, contact the agency at (620) 225-6987.
The Crisis Center is also inviting local businesses, organizations, boys and girls clubs, churches or any other interested groups to participate in their new Adopt-A-Room program.
"We want to make our shelter a bright and happy home for residents," Zimmerman said.
Sponsoring parties can choose the room or area they would like to make over. Available rooms include; one of five bedrooms, living room/computer area, living room/TV area, dining room, kitchen, porch, play room, storage and laundry room, back and front yards, shelter office, stairways and pending dog kennels.
The minimum they ask is that the walls and ceilings are painted, but sponsors can also add new carpet, decorate or anything else to make the room more comfortable for residents.
"A special plaque will be displayed in the room, thanking the adopting organization," Zimmerman said.
