Jerry L. Soderberg, 66, died Friday, April 19, 2013 at his home in Wright. He was born September 19, 1946 at Wichita, the son of Ira B. and Ethel A. Allensworth Soderberg. A longtime area resident, for 39 years he was the owner and operator of S.O.S. Engine Service and built motors for several area racers and was a sponsor on many different cars, including his brother-in-law, Jon Johnson. He retired in November 2011. He was a race car driver and loved NASCAR, World of Outlaws and URSS Sprints. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He was a member of Howard Gotschall VFW Post 1714 and GI Forum both in Dodge City. On January 15, 1994 he married Vera Hemel at Dodge City. She survives. Other survivors include a step-son, Keefe Hemel and wife Candi, Dodge City; a step-daughter, Nike Patterson and husband Randy, Quinter; and two step-grandchildren, Allyson Patterson and Brody Hemel. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Ft. Dodge, with Rev. Dick Robbins officiating and military honors by Howard Gotschall VFW Post 1714 and Southwest Kansas Military Funeral Honors. There will be no public viewing, cremation has taken place. Friends may sign the register from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City.
