The Dodge City Lady Demons won their first game of the season but couldn't complete the sweep in their doubleheader Friday against Wichita South.
The Lady Demons beat South 29-9 in three innings in the first game and fell short in their late-inning rally to fall 10-9 in the second game.
"It felt good to get the win, but we wanted the sweep," said DCHS softball head coach Heather Steiner. "I'm a little disappointed with game two because we just didn't make the adjustments at the plate we needed. The pitching was a little slower than what we were used to and it took us the seventh inning to not hit the ball at them."
Alexis Sanchez was 3-for-4 with four RBI to lead the Lady Demons (1-11), while Brooklyn Garcia also knocked in four runs and Riley Lopp scored five times. The Lady Demons were helped by 19 walks issued by the Lady Titans.
Lauren Esquibel led Dodge City in the second game, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Sydney Bemish went 3-for-4 and Kennedy Burks went 2-for-3.
Matti Tieben took the decision in both games of the doubleheader.
The Lady Demons return home for a doubleheader Tuesday night against Elkhart at Legends Park. They will be hosting a "Girls Night Out" at Legends, inviting girls from kindergarten through eighth grade. The children will be able to get in free with a paid adult admission. The first 30 girls will get a free t-shirt and all the girls will meet the Lady Demons after the game, while the YMCA will be there with information regarding summer softball.
