Interfaith Housing, a non-profit organization that assists low-income families with housing and other financial needs, is getting ready to present Raise the Roof 2013—a colorful fun run/walk and concert right here in Dodge City.
The event will take place June 22 and is open to anyone in the community who wants to help support a local organization.
"It's kind of like a color run," explained Kaci Davignon, western Kansas coordinator for Interfaith Housing. "Except we'll use watercolor instead of powders."
According to their website, ihs-housing.org, all runners are asked to wear a white t-shirt for the race. Runners who register before May 7, will be provided with a shirt.
"We ask participants to wear white because there will be blasts of color at regular intervals throughout the course," the website says, "with a huge burst of color at the end."
Raise the Roof begins with registration at 3 p.m. at Cavalier Field, then the race starts at 4. After the race, which will also end at Cavalier Field, a huge after-party will be held, with games, face-painting, a bounce house and more for kids, as well as hamburgers for everyone from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Then, Jake Gill, a country artist from here in Kansas, will perform at 6:30 p.m.
"It's going to be a really fun event for the whole family to enjoy," Davignon said. "There's something that everyone will enjoy."
Participants can choose to do any or all of the events, for different costs. To register for the entire event for an adult costs $40, Registration for children ages 5-12 is$20. For a complete list of pricing options, or to register, visit raisetheroof2013dodgecity.eventbrite.com, or call (620) 662-8370.
"This is the first time we've held a Raise the Roof event but we're hoping it's a success," Davignon said.
All money raised from the event will go to Interfaith Housing Services. According to Davignon the organization applies for several grants each year to be able to run their programs, but doesn't receive money to pay rent on their building, pay utilities or any of the other day-to-day costs of running the organization. This money will go to those costs.
"Right now we're supported by the Hutchinson offices, which is great. But, we're hoping to be able to become self-sufficient and support ourselves here in Dodge," Davignon said. "This is the first step to making that happen."
