  • The Depot Theater Guild is preparing once again for the annual 5x5 Art Auction.
"It was a really fun event last year," Sarah Schaeffer, a committee member for the event, said. "People really enjoyed the artwork, and had fun with the silent bids."
Like last year, the event will take place at 5:55 p.m. on Sunday May 5th, 5-5, in the El Vaquero room at the Santa Fe Depot. Cost to get in is $5.55. The event is being put together by Schaeffer, Sherry Polkinghorn and Connie Hatfield, who are all committee members for the guild.
"We kind of overdid it on the five’s," Schaeffer joked, but it's a fun way to stick with the theme."
The real reason it's called the 5x5 Art Auction though is because all artists who participate are given a five-inch by five-inch canvas on which to create their artwork. They can't frame the canvas, or change the dimensions in any way, but are free to use any subject matter and medium they choose.
"People got really creative last year," Schaeffer said. "We had people paint, draw, glue and just about anything else you can think to do with a canvas. It turned out great."
When guests arrive they will be given a bid number and the silent auction will begin. Guests will have two hours to see all the artwork, get their bids in on their favorite pieces, then the winners will be announced, money will be collected and the highest bidders can take home their art at the end of the evening.
"Last year several people were sneaking around trying to get the highest bid in unnoticed," Schaeffer said. "It was so fun seeing everyone try to bid like that."
Hors d'oeuvres will be served throughout the evening, and there will be an open bar too. Tea and coffee will also be served.
Local and area artists are contributing all the artwork for the auction. Some of the artists include: Schaeffer herself, Devlin Goldworm and Pam Algrim. But, several others will contribute works as well.
"The deadline to enter is Wednesday, so I'm sure we'll have a big rush of entries then," Schaeffer said. "We're hoping for at least 35 to 40 pieces."
All the money raised from the auction will go to the Depot Theater Company.
"We were really pleased with how the event went last year," Schaeffer said, "and hope that this year is just as successful."
