The Dodge City Fire Department is working to determine the exact cause of a fire that sent black smoke billowing above town late Tuesday morning.

The fire started around 11:30 a.m,. according to Captain Ken Spencer with the fire department who said crews were dispatched to the intersection of Woodland and Trail Street in south Dodge. Spencer did not know the exact address of the structure, but said it was an auto shop named Sinaloa Auto.

Bayron Salguero, a mechanic at the shop, said he and three other employees were breaking down a truck for scrap metal when the cutting torch they were using ignited some nearby gasoline. Captain Spencer confirmed Salguero's account of the fire, but also said the exact cause is still under investigation.

No one was injured in the blaze.

Fire crews continued to put out hot spots in the building well into the afternoon. Spencer said the building is a total loss.
