Wilson wins two events, Harshberger, Flax, Lampe also earn league champ honors
Freshman Brekk Flax admitted she was nervous in her first league meet on her home track, but used that as a way to motivate instead of be complacent in her running.
Flax won the 100 in a time of 12.96, finished second in the 200 (28.01) and was the anchor leg for the Lady Demons who won the 4x100 relay in a time of 50.61.
"Coach (Dave) Foster has told us to go out and run like we're ticked off," Flax said. "I did that and it helped me relax as I was running. I actually impressed myself."
The 4x100 relay team had three of Dodge City's top four point getters on the day with a combined four individual league titles to go along with the relay event with each member (Summer Wilson, Jessie Harshberger, Dezera Johnson and Flax) extending their lead to the easy win.
"That's a group that has a good chance of standing on the medals stand at the 6A level as a group in the state meet," Foster said.
Wilson won two events — the 100 hurdles in a school record 14.96 and the high jump after clearing the bar at 5-2. Wilson also finished second in the long jump (16-5 1/4).
"Summer was a few inches away from four gold medals and she's the heart and soul with her leadership on the girls side," Foster said. "Breaking the school record in the hurdles was one of her goals for the year. She was the cornerstone for us."
Harshberger came back to also win the 400 (1:01.86); while Ciera Lampe won the discus by two inches (105-0), and Katrina Roenfeldt broke the school record in the javelin (114-9 1/2) in finishing second in that event. Others in the top three included Rachel Durler (javelin, 106-3 1/2, third).
Garden City won the girls team title with 110 points, followed by the Lady Demons (94), Hays (81), Liberal (73) and Great Bend (15).
"Our group is pushing Garden City a little harder than people thought we would," Foster said. "We're putting away a lot of points and as the meet runs out, the regional could change in the opposite directions."
The Lady Demons will host the Class 6A regional next Friday at Memorial Stadium.
