The Kiwanis Club of Dodge City is preparing to launch their fourth flag program.
"We ask community members for a $30 donation," explained Jan McNiece, a Kiwanis Club of Dodge City member. "Then we come out to their home, put a support in their lawn near the street, and five days a year a member of our club comes and puts a flag in to display for the day."
The five days that flags are placed are: Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veteran's Day.
"We have about 45 people who participate now," McNiece said, "but we would welcome more support."
Community members who participated in the past were contacted via letter asking them if they would like to participate again, if so, they just need to mail in a check for $30 to the Kiwanis Club of Dodge City, P.O. Box 313, Dodge City Kansas, 67801, and the Kiwanis will do the rest.
New participants, however, are asked to contact a member of the club, and sign a contract providing their address and contact information.
Anyone who wants to participate may contact McNiece at (620) 338-4672 or Van Hampton, president of the club, at (620) 338-3441.
The funds raised from this program will be used throughout the year to help the Kiwanis support local youth programs.
"There's no one specific group we're raising money for," McNiece said, "just whatever comes up."
One hundred percent of the money raised from this program will go back into the community through the programs the Kiwanis support. Currently they support the Santa Fe Trail Council BSA, Dodge City recreation, United Methodist Youthville, the Tournament of Champions, Friendship Feast, the Salvation Army's general fund and Angel Tree gifts, and more.
"This is a really easy way to show your patriotism and help out your community at the same time," McNiece said.
