  • Bright Beginnings Early Childhood Center is getting ready once again to present "A Living Library" at Village Square Mall on June 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
"We will have 10 different stories being read in different locations throughout the mall," Donna Crockett, coordinator said. "Children and parents may come and go from story to story as they please."
At each story there will be a narrator, telling the story, and live characters from the book to interact with the kids. Each story takes about 15 to 20 minutes to tell, and families do not have to listen to all 10 if they do not wish to.
"Not all volunteers have decided what book they're reading yet," Crockett said, "But I know we'll have The Cat in the Hat reading his book, and 'Little Red Hen' being read as well."
The event is geared towards children age birth through 2nd grade, but older children may enjoy the event as well.
"After kids are done listening to the stories, they can visit our bookstore and pick out their own copies of books, for free," Crockett said.
Books will be available in English and Spanish, and in addition to the children's books there will be some parenting books, and books for older children too.
"The whole purpose of this event is to get kids reading during the summer," Crockett said. "We're trying to get the whole family involved in showing kids how important and fun reading can be."
Last year about 275 bags of books were given out, and Crockett hopes as many, if not more are given away this year.
Every 30 minutes throughout the event there will be "spotlight" performances taking place on the stage in the movie theater.
"They will be sure to entertain the whole family," Crockett said.
To top off the event some of your children's favorite characters will be walking around the whole time.  Elmo and Curious George will pose for pictures, and greet all their fans.
"A Living Library" is sponsored by a grant from Bright Beginnings, but all children in the Dodge City area and surrounding communities are invited to come out and participate.
"We really hope that lots of families will come out," Crockett said, "and get some new books for their children to enjoy this summer. That's the whole point, keeping kids engaged in reading."
