Meade senior Trevin Wiens showed the crowd at Wichita State's Cessna Stadium that no one could top him in Class 2A in the speed events.
Wiens claimed a rare triple Saturday afternoon, winning the 100 (10.73), the 200 (23.01) and the 400 (49.67), to help the Buffaloes finish second in the final 2A boys standings with 60 points (four less than state champion Plainville).
Wiens wasn't the only runner who gave the Buffaloes a chance at the state title.
Hayden Borth finished second in the 300 hurdles (40.82) and fourth in the 110 hurdles (15.47); while Morgan Davis finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 149-0 to go along with his Friday sixth place in the shot put. Chris Hardaway placed sixth in the 300 hurdles (41.56), as well as finishing third Friday in the boys long jump.
Other area state individual champions from Saturday include Morgan Ediger of Cimarron (Class 3A girls 300 hurdles, 46.64) and Kiowa County's Chelsea Oberle (Class 2A girls triple jump, 36-9 3/4).
Cimarron's Eva Koopman finished second in the high jump and fifth in the long jump. The Lady Bluejays scored 22 points as a team and finished 16th in Class 3A.
Heather Melton scored in two events in Class 2A (100 hurdles, 15.17, third; high jump, 5-2, fourth), while Erica Bertram finished fifth in the 400 (1:01.16). The Lady Mavericks finished third as a team with 39.5 points.
Meade's Tarah Wiens finished sixth in the Class 2A girls 200 (28.10) and seventh in the 100 (12.91) to go with her win Friday in the long jump; while Kinzie Friesen finished third in the triple jump (35-4 1/2) to help the Lady Buffaloes finish with 27 points (13th place).
South Gray's Jake Peters finished second in the discus (158-6) with the Rebel boys scoring 12 points as a team (Class 2A, 21st place). Kiowa County scored 18 points (13th) with most of its points coming off Damien Odle's win in the javelin; while Hodgeman County scored six points (tied for 31st).
Kayla Olson of South Central scored points for the Lady Timberwolves in two Class 1A events: 100 hurdles (15.90, third), 300 hurdles (47.54, third). Souith Central scored 16 points and finished tied for 16th, the highest of the Class 1A area schools for the girls.
Kara Reimer of Ashland finished third in the Class 1A girls (2:27.28) and teammate Shelby Luerman finished fifth in the long jump to lead the Lady Bluejays to 15 points (tied for 19th place). Bucklin finished 22nd with 13 points (including Gentry Stout's win in the pole vault), with Minneola scoring seven (33rd), Pawnee Heights 4.5 (41st) and Kinsley three (tied 49th).
Fowler led the Class 1A area boys teams with 18 points (tied for 11th). Tem Shetley finished fourth in the 400 (51.63), while the 4x800 relay team finished third (8:23.11) and the 4x400 relay squad finished fifth (3:35.94).
South Central tied for 19th (13 points) with Stetson Underwood finishing fourth in the 100 (11.29). Kinsley scored 5.75 points (33rd place), followed by Spearville (5, tied 35th), Minneola (4, 41st), Pawnee Heights (3, tied 45th) and Ashland (0.75, 56th).
