  • Preston Smith from Dodge City will compete in the 2013 World Livestock Auctioneer Championship (WLAC) to be held June 14-15 in Montgomery, Ala. Smith is sponsored by Winter Livestock, Inc. and Pratt Livestock.
The annual WLAC, which marks its 50th anniversary this year, showcases the professional auctioneering skills and livestock marketing knowledge of hundreds of auctioneers who competed in the qualifying and championship contests. This prestigious event is produced by Livestock Marketing Association (LMA), the leading trade association serving livestock auction markets and is hosted by the Montgomery Stockyards, LLC.
This year auctioneers competed in one of three qualifying events held in Davenport, Wash., Hattiesburg, Miss., and Bristow, Okla., to reach the WLAC semi-finals. Smith was a top ten finisher in the Bristow, Okla., qualifying event.  The top ten winners of each qualifying event move on to the WLAC semi-finals, along with the reigning International Livestock Auctioneer Champion.
At the WLAC contest in Montgomery, each of the 31 semi-finalists will compete in a live interview where they must establish their knowledge of the livestock marketing business, and demonstrate their ability to express that knowledge with clarity. During the live auction event, contestants auction cattle to actual buyers and are judged on the clarity of their auction chant; vocal quality; their ability to catch bids, conduct the sale; and if the judge would hire this auctioneer for their own livestock market.
This year’s champion will take home $5,000 in cash, a custom diamond ring, trophy and other prizes, as well as the use of a brand new pickup for the year.  The reserve and runner-up champions will take home $2,000 and $1,000, respectively.
When not on the auction block at his home livestock market, the world champion will spend his year traveling the country sharing his auctioneering skills with other livestock markets, and acting as a spokesperson for the industry.
You can watch contestants compete in the live interview contest at www.lmaauctions.com from 2-4:30 p.m. (CT) on Friday, June 14.  The auctioneering competition will be broadcast live on RFD-TV on Saturday, June 15, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. (CT).  The World Livestock Auctioneer Champion, Reserve Champion, and Runner-up awards will be presented at an awards ceremony beginning at 7:30 p.m. (CT) and can be watched live on www.lmaauctions.com.
