  • The Dodge City Athletics continue to struggle getting runs on the board scoring only once in a 5-1 loss to the Liberal BeeJays in Jayhawk League action at Cavalier Field.
The Athletics have scored only nine runs in their five Jayhawk League losses after opening the season with two wins (with five of those runs coming in one game). The Dodge City runners have been getting runners into scoring position, but the bats haven't been able to produce runs for the squad.
The Athletics stranded 11 baserunners against the BeeJays in Monday night's game including seven in scoring position.
The BeeJays picked up a run in the top of the first off of Dodge City starter Cody Brown when Tanner Rainey recorded a bunt single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tanner Dearman and scored on a double by Zach Reding .
Liberal made the score 2-0 in the top of the third when Reding reached base on a throwing error, steals second base and scores on a single by Dylan Delson.
Dodge City got its run in the bottom of the fourth. Andrew Bynum reached base on a throwing error, eventually went to third on a double play, and scored on a single by Ben Gann.
The Athletics had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of  the sixth after Louis Diaz singled, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dillon Englehart and went to third on a balk by Liberal starter Tyler Wiedenfeld. Liberal shortstop Tanner Kirk assisted on a groundout and caught a line drive to end the threat.
Liberal pushed the lead to 3-1 in the top of the eighth when Seth Stevens reached on a two-base error by Diaz, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Darien McLemore.
The Athletics wasted another key chance to score in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded and only one out; but Kevin Hall struck out and Nick Osuna hit a fielders choice to end the threat.
The BeeJays extended their lead to 5-1 in the ninth inning on RBI sacrifice flies by Reding and Delso.
The two teams play again tonight, this time at Seward County Community College in Liberal. Starting time is 7 p.m. The next home game for the Athletics is Wednesday against the Hays Larks. That game also starts at 7 p.m.
