  • The American Cancer Society, the nation's leading voluntary health
organization, will hold it's 19th annual Relay For Life event at Memorial Stadium beginning with a free will donations hamburger feed at 5:30pm and opening ceremony to start at 7pm.  The event will go all night and end at 7am on Saturday.  The theme for this year's event is Super Heroes in the Fight Against Cancer.  There will be local entertainment from about 8-10pm. Parking will be on the south side of Memorial Stadium, as the north entrance will be closed.
"We have 18 teams this year and we hope to raise over $72,000," said event Co-Chair Corry Israel.
Relay For Life is a 24-hour event that brings together teams from local businesses, schools, churches and families for fun, food, music, entertainment and a night under the stars, while team members take turns walking or running on a track. Relay For Life begins with a Cancer Survivors Lap followed by a reception to celebrate life. The monies raised from this event will go toward the American Cancer Society's research, education, advocacy and patient service programs.
One of the highlights of the event is the Luminaria Ceremony, which begins at 10:00pm. During the event, people may purchase a luminaria in memory or in honor of someone who has been touched by cancer. The luminaria bags are placed around the track and lit during a memorial ceremony while names of loved ones who have battled cancer and those who have lost their battle with cancer are scrolled on the JumboTron.
"I encourage everyone to come out to the event to cheer on cancer survivors during the Opening Ceremony and to remember everyone touched by cancer during the Luminaria Ceremony at dusk," said Israel. "We invite all local cancer survivors, family and friends to attend.  There is something for everyone! Teams will have onsite fundraisers selling food and sno cones, there will be a chance drawing for gift certificates, a bounce house and much more!"
