The Dodge City Athletics won their second straight game over the Derby Twins in their Jayhawk League battle Saturday night at Cavalier Field. Wichita State freshman All-American Garrett Brummett threw seven innings of work in his first start for the Athletics. Brummett gave up one earned run, four hits and a walk while striking out seven to pick up the decision. The Athletics (4-8, 2-8) took advantage of Derby miscues to win the second game of the seven-game homestand after losing their first eight Jayhawk League contests. Dodge City loaded the bases in the third inning and scored all of them when Derby rightfielder Zach Steadman committed an error on a ball hit Ben Gann. The Twins (5-6, 4-6) gave up another run in the fifth inning on an error with the bases loaded when shortstop Jason McMurray misplayed another ball hit by Gann. Derby got on the board in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by Dylan Boston, but was answered in the bottom of the inning on a RBI triple by Zach Jacobs. Derby made the score 5-2 in the eighth on a single by McMurray, but Dodge City answered back with a RBI single by Joe Haddox. The Twins' final run came when Jake Ward hit a RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth. The two teams complete the series at Cavalier Field tonight at 7 p.m.
