  • Rangers beat Ulysses, Hooker to advance in Coffin Invitational

  • The Dodge City Rangers opened up play in the Bob Coffin Invitational with two impressive wins Saturday morning at Demon Field. The Rangers beat Ulysses 9-1 in six innings to open up the tournament Saturday morning and followed that with a 4-0 victory over the Hooker (Okla.) Horny Toads to win Pool A of the tournament. Hunter Ontiberos gave up three hits and two walks while striking out four in his six-inning complete game victory over Ulysses. Gideon Wells went 2-for-3 with a RBI single in the first and a two-run single in the fifth to break the game wide open. Austin Weiser went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and a RBI; and Andrew Balderaz was 2-for-3 with a triple, run score and knocked in a run. Collin Gifford struck out 10 while giving up five hits and a walk in his seven-inning shutout. The Rangers (5-1) got on the board in the first inning on a RBI double by Grant Meininger. Wells hit his second two-run single in as many games to make the scored 3-0 after three innings; and made the tag at home in the top of the fourth to preserve the shutout. Dodge City's final run came on a delayed double steal as Balderaz stole home after the Hooker catcher tried to catch Jordan Doan on a steal of second base. Doan finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored. The Rangers play at 9 a.m. Sunday against the winner of the Ulysses-Valley Center winner. Those two teams played Saturday night.
