The Dodge City Athletics returned to their winning ways, but they gave themselves a little bit of fright in the final three innings in a 10-5 victory over Team Colorado at Cavalier Field.
The Athletics (5-9) scored all of its runs in the first five innings and then gave up two runs in the seventh and three more in the ninth before sealing the win in the first of four games between the two teams this week.
Zach Jacobs was 4-for-4 with a run and three RBI, while David LaFleur scored three runs for Dodge City. Ryan Petersen threw six innings of shutout ball for the Athletics, giving up seven hits and two walks while striking out five to earn the decision on the mound.
Jacobs hit a RBI single to open the scoring for Dodge City in the first inning and he later scored on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Blair. The Athletics made the score 5-0 in the second on a run-scoring single by Nick Osuna, a run-scoring double by LaFleur, and Jacobs' second RBI single in as many innings.
Dodge City increased the lead to 8-0 in the fourth. Jacobs hit his third RBI single of the game after Scott Loper hit a RBI double. Loper later scored on an error.
The margin became 10 in the fifth inning on a two-run home run Kyle Young.
Colorado scored its first two runs in the seventh inning on a bases-loaded walk issued to Sam Jones by reliever Quade Adams and a sacrifice fly by Jordan Rousselle. The inning ended when Adams was able to induce a double play ball to stop the threat.
Colorado scored its three unearned runs in the ninth when Cody Jenkins hit a bases-loaded double to complete the scoring.
The two teams will meet again tonight with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
