As the hot, dry winds and summertime temperatures continue to help this year’s wheat crop ready for harvest, it is time for Ford County producers to start thinking about entering the Ford County Market Wheat Show. This annual event at the Ford County Fair gives producers to show off their best wheat varieties.
Entering is easy. While on the scales at your local co-op, just inform them that you would like to enter this load in the Market Wheat Show. They will collect the sample and give you an information card to complete. Samples will be collected and tested by the Kansas Grain Inspection Service. After harvest, an official crop data card will be mailed to you. Complete it and mail it back, and you are entered.
Samples will be judged on the following criteria: variety, protein, test weight, dockage, shrunken or broken kernels, and the crop data card.
All wheat samples should be produced during the current year and should be combine run only. Each farmer is limited to one entry for each variety.
Completed data cards must be received by the Ford County Extension Office by 5:00 p.m. on July 8th.
The winners will be announced on Sunday, July 21st at the Ford County Fair. For more information on the market wheat show, contact your local co-op or the Ford County Extension Office.
