Food music and people were out celebrating friends and family members who had survived a cancer diagnosis. Others were there in remembrance of a loved one lost to the disease. But everyone was having a good time and raising money to be donated to cancer research.
That's the idea behind Relay For Life. To come together to celebrate life after cancer and to work for a cure.
This year, the theme of the relay was "fight like a super hero" and attendees had a blast with it.
There were several people walking around the track all night in capes and super hero costumes.
"We had really good attendance at the event this year," Corry Israel, event co-chair said. "There were more teams and more children here this year than ever in the past, which is great."
Israel attributes the increase in children to the fact that more children have been touched by cancer, one team was walking in memory of sister who had passed away from cancer. Others walked for Erin Pyle, a local 11 year-old who is currently fighting cancer.
The 20th annual relay was a huge success, bringing in over $73,000.
"More money is still coming in too," Israel said, "which is great."
Israel said the goal was to raise $72,000 so exceeding that is wonderful.
"I want to thank everyone in the community who came out to the relay, or donated to it," Israel said, "this event would not be possible without their help and support. I'd also like to thank the high school PE students and staff for helping us set everything up the morning before the relay."
