They say you learn something new everyday...which has certainly been the case throughout my summer here in Dodge. I was at the visitors center yesterday waiting for the trolley when a little boy and his mother came in looking for a geocache? I had no idea what they said let alone what it meant. Luckily our CVB employee knew exactly what they were looking for and handed over the container.Geocaching is a real-world outdoor treasure hunt using GPS coordinates to lead you to different locations. Once you reach the destination, there is a hidden container with a logbook and some trading items. You sign your name in the book and if you take something, you must leave an item of equal or greater value. What a fun idea to do when taking a family trip. I can't believe I've never heard of this! There are currently 2,116,695 geocaches hidden and over 5 million people looking for them worldwide! I was so surprised to see that there were even some in my small hometown of Tribune, KS! This has even became so popular that people are creating geotours to promote their city! Its called GeoTourism...how clever! : )
Once the Geocachers moved on I still had some time to spare before the trolley ride, so I got to chat with a few more tourists. Judy and Reggie were visiting Dodge City all the way from Santa Anna, California! So glad they made the 19 hour drive to visit the old west. They were interested in how the west transitioned from Indian to cowboy territory. Such a nice couple, I enjoyed meeting them!
While they got to tour Boot Hill Museum
and take a trolley ride of their own, I met up with the Dodge City Area Young Professionals. They had the opportunity to become a tourist in Dodge City and take the historic trolley tour!
The trolley gives an hour long narrated tour of historical sites, the cattle industry, and even takes you out to Fort Dodge. The tour is offered four times a day, so get your coupon
and hop on the trolley today!!!
That's all for this week, but as July quickly approaches so does the FUN! Keep an eye on our calendar
so you when to get the heck into Dodge!
And remember folks...cowboy up or go sit in the truck!
