For over two months now, 11 year-old Erin Pyle has been fighting bone cancer. She has had several rounds of chemotherapy and just recently had surgery on her leg to remove the tumor.
According to her Great Aunt, Stephanie Elder, Pyle was able to return home recently after her successful surgery June 12.
"It was a five hour surgery and they replaced the entire tibia, knee joint and muscle using a titanium rod and muscle from the back of her leg," Elder said.
Unfortunately, doctors were only able to remove 60% of the tumor, so Pyle will have to return to the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children in Colorado where she has been receiving treatment.
"Erin will have to return for seven more months of chemo," Elder said. "She will go to Denver for one week, then have two weeks off at home between treatments.
Having to spend so much time in Denver means that Pyles' parents expenses are adding up quickly, and so are the medical bills.
To help ease the cost, a Zumba fundraiser will be held this Friday evening at the new Zumba studio located at 601 N. 2nd Ave. in Dodge City.
Those who are already a member of the Zumba class may sign up for just $5, the charge for anyone who's not yet a member will be $10.
There will be two sessions, one at 5 p.m. and one at 6:15 p.m., each class can accommodate up to 80 people.
Both classes will be taught by LIliana Zuniga, a certified Zumba instructor.
"I've been certified for over a year now," Zuniga said, "that means that I can teach basic classes for beginners, and also toning classes that target specific areas women want to work on."
Zuniga promised that people of any skill level will be able to participate in the fundraiser classes.
"You don't need to know the moves or even how to dance," Zuniga said, "just follow along with me and you'll be fine."
To register for the fundraiser or for more information stop in at the Zumba studio any time between now and Friday evening or by calling (620) 225-3980.
"Erin's motto is 'I choose to fight', Elder said, "and she has been a real trooper and an inspiration to us all."
Help support this courageous young lady who is in the fight of her life.
