The Dodge City Athletics lost their fourth straight Jayhawk League contest, falling to the division leading Hays Larks 5-2 at Larks Park.
The Larks scored all of their runs in the first four innings and kept Dodge City off the board until the sixth inning in extending their lead in the Jayhawk to two games over El Dorado.
Hayden Carter was the losing pitcher for Dodge City. Carter gave up four runs (three earned), six hits and three walks in three innings.
The Larks (17-6, 14- Jayhawk) got a home run from Clayton Garland in the bottom of the first to being the rout, and extended the lead to 2-0 in the second when Desmond Roberts walked, stole second and scored on an error by Athletics' third baseman Dillon Engelhart. Ty Gilmore hit a two-run single in the third inning to push Hays ahead 4-0.
The Athletics (10-16, 5-14) had a chance to score in the top of the fourth, but couldn't take advantage. Woody Drexler opened with a double, but was caught in a rundown between second and third on a ball hit by Brian Mills. Mills was able to reach second base during the rundown and advanced to third on a groundout; but was stranded on another groundout.
Hays got its final run in the bottom of the fourth when Jake Placzek was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a single by Mackenzie Handel.
Dodge City got both of its runs in the sixth inning. Zach Jacobs reached base on an error and Drexler followed with a single. Mills followed with a double to score Jacobs and Drexler scored on a groundout by Louis Diaz.
Nick Goza threw a complete nine innings to earn the victory on the mound. Goza gave up three hits and three walks while striking out six. One of the two runs charged to Goza was unearned.
The two teams meet again tonight at Cavalier Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
