The Dodge City Rangers went 1-1 after the first day of pool play at the Woodward Baseball Festival.
The Rangers opened the tournament by losing to the Woodward Minor Travelers 5-4 in eight innings, before coming back to beat Weatherford (Okla.) 6-4 in the second game of the day. Dodge City is 21-3 going into the second of three days of pool play.
It was the first loss for Dodge City to the Travelers in five games this season as the Travelers scored two in the seventh to force extra innings and the game-winning run in the next inning.
Dodge City scored their first two runs with runners scoring from third base on passed balls.
Austin Weiser opened the game with a single, went to second on a wild pitch and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Andrew Balderaz before scoring on the catcher's miscue. Woodward answered with a run in the second inning.
Grant Meininger scored the second run in the fourth inning when he singled, stole second and went to third on a throwing error by the catcher then scored on the catcher's second passed ball.
The Rangers made the score 4-0 in the fifth on a RBI single by Gideon Wells, with Jordan Doan scoring the second run from third when the Woodward outfielder dropped a fly ball hit by Collin Gifford.
Woodward came back with a run in the fifth off starter Grant Meininger. Meininger gave up two runs in six innings of work. The Travelers came back with two runs off Dawson Davis in the seventh and the other in the extra inning to suffer the setback decision.

The Oklahoma squad took the early lead in the top of the first, but the Rangers scored two runs in the bottom of the second on a two-run single by Davis.
After Weatherford tied the game in the top of the fourth, Dodge City scored four in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good after loading the bases. Doan induced a bases-loaded walk, Wells hit a two-run single and Meininger hit a run-scoring single.
Juan Carlos Vallejo threw six innings to earn the pitching decision for the Rangers. Andrew Balderaz threw the seventh to earn the save.
