The Dodge City Athletics remain winless after five games against the Hays Larks after a 15-11 slugfest Wednesday at Cavalier Field.
Twenty-three of the 26 runs of the game were scored in the first four innings.
The Athletics (10-17, 5-15) scored one in the first, two in the third and seven in the fourth to stay within striking distance. The final Dodge City run came in the sixth. Louis Diaz went 3-for-5 with five runs batted in. Dillon Engelhart went 3-for-5 with a run, while Woody Drexler was 2-for-4 in the game.
Hays (18-6, 15-6) scored two runs in the first and second innings, six in the third and three in the fourth. Nine-hole hitter Ty Gilmore was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs to lead Hays, while Clayton Garland was 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs. Jake Placzek was 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs and two stolen bases, while Blair Beck and Desmond Roberts also knocked in two runs for the Larks.
Ian Bentley, the third of six Hays pitchers, recorded the victory on the mound; while Athletics' starting pitcher Jevin Huval suffered the setback.
