  • Rangers lose in baseball tournament semifinals

  • The Dodge City Rangers lost two of three games in the Woodward Baseball Invitational to an all-star organization of graduated high school students and college players last weekend.
    The Rangers (23-5) lost to the Southwest Shockers black team 20-4 in action Saturday afternoon. Dodge City beat the Shockers' gold team 9-1 in the tournament quarterfinals, before losing to the black team 11-8 in the semifinals.
    The Rangers scored eight in the top of the first inning of the quarterfinals against the top-seeded team of the other pool.
    Austin Weiser hit a two-run double and scored twice in the frame, Gideon Wells hit a two-run single, Jordan Doan and Andrew Balderaz hit RBI singles, and two runs scored on Southwest errors.
    Dodge City scored another run in the top of the fourth inning when Doan scored on a wild pitch after he walked, moved to second when Balderaz was caught in a rundown between second and third, and went to third on a groundout.
    Weiser was the winning pitcher for the Rangers, giving up one run, four hits and four walks while striking out four in five innings of work.
    No information was received on the Sunday night loss to the black team in the semifinals.
    Shockers black 20, Rangers 4
    Dodge City (23-5 after weekend play) scored a run in the four of the five innings, but the Black squad scored five in the first, second and fifth innings on the way to the rout.
    Andrew Balderaz scored three runs for the Rangers.
    Balderaz walked and stole second in the first and third innings. Balderaz scored in the first on a throwing error on a ball hit by Gideon Wells; and in the third on a run-scoring single by Wells.
    The Rangers scored a run in the fourth when Eric Reid doubled and later scored on a double by Dawson Davis.
    Balderaz singled in the fifth, reached second on a passed ball and later scored on a wild pitch.
    Hunter Ontiberos was the losing pitcher in the game.
