  • World of Outlaws series leader Daryn Pittman took advantage of a cut tire suffered by defending series champion Donny Schatz on the 20th lap to win Saturday's 30-lap feature of the two-day Boot Hill Showdown at Dodge City Raceway Park.
Pittman said he'll take the victory any way he can get it since it's been more than a month that he's collected a trophy from the winners' circle.
"We'll take the win any way we can," Pittman said. "We're pretty happy to get out of here with a win. Any win is big and this one was pretty important. We have had a couple of seconds and not being able to win a race. We were steady, but wins are what makes this fun. This gives us some confidence with a number of big races to come."
Pittman claimed his sixth feature of the season by more than a second ahead of Paul McMahan, currently second in the points series. Rookie Cody Darrah was third and Jason Sides finished fourth in the feature.
It was deja vu in reverse for Schatz on Saturday. Schatz won the Friday feature of the Showdown by half-a-length when he went below front-runner Sides, who had a tire cut on the backstretch of the last lap.
Schatz was dominant from the pole position in the placing dash and in the feature with Pittman showing any kind of challenge once Schatz started running into traffic. The only caution came on the 20th lap in a spin out, but Schatz had to change tires before the restart, which pushed him back from first to 13th. Schatz finished ninth in the feature.
"We were hanging with him for the most part," Pittman said. "I don't think he was any better than us and we weren't any better than him. I guess he just ran over some debris on the track. I didn't know until the caution and I saw his tire looked pretty flat. It was a fortunate break for us and unfortunate for him."
Schatz was able to push past Pittman for the six-lap dash to determine the order for the feature. Darrah was fourth and Tim Kaeding placed fourth in the dash.
Steve Kinser, Sides and Joey Saldana won the heat races and James McFadden claimed the quick time award during qualifying to open the night.
