The Dodge City Athletics fell for the sixth time to the Hays Larks this season, this time a 7-2 setback Monday night at Cavalier Field.
The Athletics had won three of their last four games before getting a three-day break between games and it seemed to slow down the Dodge City offense.
Zair Koeiman went 3-for-3 with two runs and three runs batted in to lead the Larks (26-9, 19-9).
Hays scored two runs in the top of the second inning. Taylor Petersen walked and Zair Koeiman hit a double to begin the inning. Desmond Roberts and Spencer Neve followed with RBI singles. The Larks made the score 3-0 on a third-inning RBI single by Clayton Garland.
Dodge City (15-20, 8-18) had a chance to score in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded and only one out after Zach Jacobs on third after hitting a double and Louis Diaz hit a single and stole second, and Cole Davis reached on a fielder's choice; but Hays starting pitcher Jason Zgardowski struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
The Larks increased the margin to 4-0 in the fifth on a RBI double by Koeiman. All the runs were scored off Dodge City starting pitcher Cody Brown.
The Athletics answered back with a run in the eighth inning, but the comeback could have been much larger.
Dillon Engelhart and Jacobs opened the frame with singles. Jacobs was forced out at second on a double play hit by Brian Mills. Diaz walked and stole second, Davis walked and Englehart scored on a passed ball. Slaton walked to load the bases, but Brian Romero struck out swinging to end the threat.
The Larks got their final two runs on a RBI single by Petersen, followed by a two-run home run by Koeiman.
Woody Drexler hit a home run to complete the scoring for the Athletics.
