Dodge City's band, Ask Vinnie, has been chosen as the opening act for the country band that's won the fan-voted-on American Music Award for Breakthrough Artist.
"What's really great is that not only are we coming close to marking our 10th year anniversary as a band, but we will be able to play in front of our home crowd in one of the biggest show of the year," Jeff "Vinnie" Mooradian, Lead vocalist and band manger said. "This is definitely a pinnacle point in our music career".
According to Mooradian, Ask Vinnie, first came together with no more then four members back in August, 2003 when Mooradian decided he wanted to start a cover-band to book local gigs. Their first show took place at the Dodge City Village Square mall and attracted about 250 people and the fan base has grown since. "We've developed a great fan base here in Dodge," he said.
For the past ten years, Mooradian says the local band has played all over Dodge City and outside of Dodge.
The band made up of six members:
Jeff "Vinnie" Mooradian (lead vocal), James Slickers (rhythm axe), Jason "Stretch" McCabe (bass), Davey Shumard (drums), Kori Blue (lead axe) and Bonnie Castelli (vocals) are two-time champions of Mosaic Battle of the Bands, claiming the title for the first time in 2008 and for the second time in 2011. As their prize, the band were given the opportunity to open for band, Styx in 2008 and for Survivor in 2011.
As for Saturday's performance, Ask Vinnie will perform a wide selection of songs of different genre for everyone of all age, to enjoy. Something that has been the band's motto since day one.
"We're going to try and do a big mix of southern rock with a little bit of a country twist," Mooradian said. "From the beginning, we've always tried to reach a wide variety age group with our music."
"We've just had a lot of fun playing over the years, that's what it's all about for us," he said. "We just want to see a ton of our local fans come out and support the concert and have a good time."
Ask Vinnie...Vinnie answers
Lead vocals and band manager, Jeff, also known as 'Vinnie' says he's been playing music since he was 17 years old, traveling all over the globe performing with different bands.
Page 2 of 2 - "I have an extensive background in worship", he said. "I've performed in different youth conferences...that's where my background in music began."
Mooradian says that for him, music is his 'good release' and 'hobby' but above all his passion.
"Music is the one thing I can do for as long as I can breath," he said. "I grew up an athlete, I had the chance to play professional baseball but suffered a shoulder injury so it was real nice to be able to fall back on music. With sports, as you get older you don't perform as well but with music, you can always do it. Even if I'm in a wheelchair...I can be on stage singing. Singing simply makes me smile".
Mooradian is a father of four and says it's really nice that his kids enjoy the band's music.
