  • The 2013 Market Wheat Show winners were announced on Sunday, July 21, 2013 at the Ford County Fair.
    During the 2013 wheat harvest, local grain elevators collected samples from Ford County producers, which were analyzed by the Kansas Grain Inspection Service in Dodge City.  Points were then awarded for milling and baking quality (determined by variety characteristics), test weight, protein content, dockage and the number of shrunken and broken kernels.
    The winners for the following classes include:  Class 6170:  First place was awarded to Roger Wetzel and an entry of Overley.  Greg Hainer received second place with a Jagger entry.  Will Ellis rounded out the class with his entry of Everest.  Class 6171: A Tam 111 entry from Jim Wasson won this class.  Second place honors went to Feikert Farms- Lance Feikert also with a Tam 111 entry.  Riegel Farms placed third with Centerfield.  Class 6172:  This class is made of up blends of different varieties. First place was awarded to Royden Derstein with a blend of Jagger, Tam 111 and Overley.  Second place was awarded to Derstein Brothers-Jeremy Derstein also with a blend of Jagger, Overley and Tam 111.  Third place went to Feikert Farms-Lance Feikert with a blend of Tam 111 and T-136.   Class 6174:  Will Ellis placed first with an entry of Winterhawk.  Class 6175:  This class is made of up white wheat varieties.  Placing first was A&G Farms-Gary Hines with the white wheat variety Danby.  Maurice Bleumer placed second also with an entry of Danby.  Rounding out this class was the variety of Aspen, submitted by Frank Mages.
     The 2013 Market Wheat Show Grand Champion was Roger Wetzel and his Overley entry that scored over 800.  That entry was collected at the Belfont Branch of the Offerle Coop.  Reserve Grand Champion honors went to A&G Farms-Gary Hines and his white wheat entry of Danby.
    Pride Ag Resources sponsors the Market Wheat Show Champion traveling trophy. The top three entries, in each class, will represent Ford County at the Market Wheat Show during the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson in September.
    The Ford County Extension Council, the Ford County Fair Association, the Kansas Grain Inspection Service, Dodge City and Pride Ag Resources sponsor this annual contest.  Thanks also to all of the local elevators for promoting and taking samples for this year's Market Wheat Show.
