The Dodge City Conquistadors football team was selected to finish sixth out of the eight Jayhawk Conference football squads in a coaches' poll released Friday at the KJCCC Media Day at Friends University.
The Conqs were the only team not to win a game last season but many of the coaches felt the hiring of Gary Thomas, who had taken a non-scholarship team (College of DuPage in Illinois) to a bowl title and top 10 finish, would help the team improve immediately.
"We understand that the competition in the Jayhawk Conference is the best in the country," Thomas said during his time at the podium.
Only six total letter winners return for Dodge City from the 2012 campaign with a number of transfers, including many who followed Thomas from DuPage, who are expected to fill holes for the Conqs. Running back Tyreis Thomas ran for almost 1,000 yards last season for DuPage.
The national NJCAA runner-up Butler Grizzlies are picked to again win the Jayhawk Conference title, followed by Hutchinson, Coffeyville, Garden City, Fort Scott, Dodge City, Highland and Independence.
The Conqs and Grizzlies will open the season against each other at BG Veterans' Stadium in August.
