  • Monday night’s USD 443 Board of Education meeting was short and sweet as the board approved the purchase of iPads for Phase IV of the iPad Initiative and heard information regarding the first annual Dodge City Alumni Association Ring of Honor Induction Ceremony.
The district iPad Initiative began more than a year ago with pilot teachers utilizing the devices in certain classrooms.  Additional pilot teachers were added to the program and ongoing professional development has taken place throughout the process.  In September, Ross Elementary School is piloting the 1:1 initiative, with every student having access to an iPad.
“Everybody is really excited and keep asking daily when we get the iPads,” Amy Eakin, Assistant Principal at Ross said at Monday’s meeting.  The school is planning two separate parent nights, beginning at 5:30 p.m. on either Sept. 17 or Sept. 19.  Sessions are offered in both Spanish and English and parents can explore the devices with some hands-on stations.
A work session was held Aug. 26 to discuss the continued implementation of the iPad initiative and the board elected to proceed with a phased-in implementation requiring the purchase of approximately 835 iPads each month for the next six months.  The cost is approximately $488,285 with funds available from Capital Outlay, Contingency Reserve, Instructional Materials and Technology Equipment budgets.
In other news, Dodge City High School Principal Jacque Feist updated the board about the Ring of Honor celebration planned for Sept. 13.  The day begins at 9:20 a.m. as the Ring of Honor banners are unveiled and family members of the two inductees are introduced to current students during the pep assembly.  Family members of both former governor Fred Hall and Dale Burnett are planning on attending.  District representatives have the opportunity to meet the family members who are in town for the festivities during a luncheon and finally, family members will be seated in the chair back section of Memorial Stadium for Friday night’s game.  The official induction into the Ring of Honor follows the Pride of Southwest Kansas’ performance at half-time.  The recipients will be introduced with photos and possible video footage on the video board as family members in attendance are brought down to the field.
The final action item of the meeting was the approval of a capital outlay calendar.  Superintendent Alan Cunningham asked for a work session to discuss facilities planning.
“We would like the board of education to meet with us to give us your perspective of facility needs and what you’re hearing from the community,” he said.  The board agreed on Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. to hold the discussion.
