  • The ice skating rink at United Wireless Arena officially opened on Saturday, Sept. 7. The rink will be open through December. According to Director of Marketing for the Arena Ila Siders, the rink usually sees between 50 and 100 people during public sessions, with a boost in attendance often occurring in December. Ice skating lessons are also offered at the rink on Saturday mornings for ages four through adult. The price is $20 for four lessons including skates. The rink is also available for parties. “We’ve got plenty of room, we just need them to come out and skate,” Siders said. The High Plains Youth Hockey Association also holds practices and plays home games at the rink. The association includes players aged three to 18. Last year the local team had 55 participants. This year the team has 72 and counting. “There’s nothing more fun than this game,” Jim Johnson, VP of the association, said. “All of our people love it. We’re all volunteers. We do it because we love the game, we love the kids and we like to see the fun they’re having.” Built in February 2011, United Wireless Arena is a multi-purpose facility made for the community. It hosts concerts, family shows, sporting events, trade shows, motorsports, equestrian events, rodeos and community events. The ice rink first opened in 2011.
