The Dodge City High School Red Demons football team showed considerable progress Friday night as they battled the Liberal Redskins.
Things started off in the Red Demons' favor as they won the coin toss. The Redskins received but wound up punting back to the Demons. They were able to get within just a few yards of the end zone and went for it on fourth down. However, they were taken down and forced to punt. The Redskins responded with a run across the field as they took it all the way in for a touchdown, bringing the score to 6 to 0.
After receiving the ball back, the Demons made some progress down the field but decided to punt, bringing the score up to 6 to 3. After receiving, the Redskins gave up the ball in a turnover on downs. After a long pass to Reid, Newton ran into the end zone for a touchdown, bringing the score to 6 to 10 Red Demons.
The second quarter brought an early touchdown for the Redskins, bringing the score to 12 to 10. On their next possession, the Redskins made a long pass down 27 yards to the 19 yard line. This enabled the Redskins to get in for another touchdown, bringing the score to 20 to 10 over the Demons. However, the Red Demons responded with a touchdown thanks to Reid, who made a leaping catch for the score. This brought the total score up to 20 to 17 in favor of the Redskins.
The Redskins made a long pass down to the 10 yard line and passed it in for another touchdown, bringing the score to 26 to 17 over the Demons. On their next possession, the Demons handed the ball back to Middleton, who threw the ball for an interception. The Redskins had possession at the end of the second quarter.
A lightening delay was called during half time. Early in the third quarter, the Demons made a 50 yard field goal attempt, a school record, bringing the score to 26 to 20. On their next possession, Newton passed off to Middleton for a touchdown, bringing the Demons to the lead with a score of 26 to 27. The Redskins received the ball, making a 30 yard pass and pushing in for a touchdown, bringing the score to 34 to 27. The Demons fumbled on their next possession, allowing the Redskins to get in for another touchdown and bringing the score to 40 to 27.
In the fourth quarter the Demons fumbled the ball. Neither team was able to put points on the board throughout the quarter and the Demons continued to have trouble with dropping passes. In the end the Redskins ran out the clock, leaving a final score of 40 to 27 in favor of the Redskins.
