The Gunsmoke Trail may soon be getting an upgrade.
The City of Dodge City and SMH Consultants held a public meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 9, to discuss plans to extend the trail through Chilton Park from Soule to Comanche and along Comanche from Manor Drive to 14th Avenue.
“We have a master plan for the city and this was just the next logical phase,” Parks and Recreation director Paul Lewis said.
The extension would add .8 miles to the trail, bringing the total length to 4.25 miles. The expansion is funded by a transportation enhancement program managed by KDOT. Through the program, KDOT reimburses 80 percent of project costs.
The new expansion represents the third phase of the trail’s development. In previous phases, expansion has taken place from St. Mary Complex to Legends Park and from 6th avenue along Highway 50 and through Spiers Park. Possible future additions include expansion to Wright Park and out Comanche to Mariah Hills.
Lewis said those in attendance gave generally positive feedback regarding the expansion.
“A lot of people make use of it and so every time we add to it it’s very well received,” he said.
