  • The United Way Leaders will conduct a “Dare to Care” food drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Dillons grocery store at 1700 N. 14th Ave. Nonperishable food items collected from the event will be donated to the Manna House and United Methodist American Ministries. “Part of our mission is to do different service projects throughout the community,” United Way Leaders board member Chelsey Dawson said. “… We do this food drive every year as our way of giving back to the community and to help stuff the food pantries before the holiday season.” The food drive is currently in its third year. Previously, the event was held at Village Square Mall. Dawson said the move was part of the United Way Leaders’ effort to reach different areas of the community. The previous years’ events included games and Halloween activities, but this year the Leaders decided to focus exclusively on the food drive. Dawson said that participation at the previous two years’ events was strong and that a strong turnout is expected this year as well. “We’re expecting a good turnout and hoping that partnering with Dillons we’ll be able to get quite a few nonperishable food items donated for the agencies,” Dawson said. This year’s food drive has about six volunteers so far. Those interested in volunteering can express their interest at the event or call Chelsey Dawson at 620-227-9501. The Dodge City chapter of United Way Leaders was founded in 2010. The group is a nationwide effort of The United Way. Its goal is to provide ways for those in their 20’s to 40’s to get involved, give something back to the community and advance the common good with other professionals. Those in need can contact the Manna House at 620-227-6707 or United Methodist American Ministries at 620-225-0625.
