The Red Demons football team lost a close game on Friday, falling to the Maize Eagles on senior night 17 to 14.
Early in the game the Eagles made a pass down to the five yard line, turning the play into a field goal and bringing the score to 3 to 0. On their second possession the Demons threw an interception, allowing the Eagles to run the ball down to the six yard line. Their field go, however, was no good and the score remained 3 to 0.
The Demons fumbled early in the second quarter, resulting in an Eagles possession. The Eagles soon passed the ball into the end zone for a touchdown, bringing the score to 10 to 0. The Demons received and brought the ball down to the 9. Middleton took the ball down to the 4 and then Newton took the ball up the middle for a touchdown. The kick was good, bringing the score to 10 to 7 in favor of the Eagles.
In the third quarter, the Eagles made a long pass all the way down to the 35 but were unable to get into the end zone. A handoff to Middleton brought the Demons to the 18. The field goal was no good, however, and the score remained the same. Things turned in the Demons' favor, however, when they blocked the Eagles' kick and Ryan Lomas took the ball in for a touchdown. The kick was good, giving the Demons a lead of 14 to 10 over the Eagles.
In the fourth quarter Newton made a long pass to Jace Larson at the 11 but the team was unable to grab additional points. The Eagles responded with their own run down to the opposite 11, then ran the ball in for a touchdown. The score was 17 to 14 in favor of the Eagles.
In the next Demons possession Middleton made a stunning run down the middle of the field, weaving in and out of Eagles players and taking the ball down to the 30. The Demons went for a field goal but the kick was no good. In their next possession, the Eagles ran out the clock. The final score was 17 to 14.
After the game coach Foster commended the team on their effort.
“I thought they battled… but we had some miscues,” he said.
He also commended Blaik Middleton on his performance.
Next week the Red Demons will travel to Garden City.
