Between games at the high school basketball Tournament of Champions, residents and visitors can score some shopping and spectacle at the KaleidEscape Kansas.
Organizer and promoter Kimberly Unruh says the "specialty show" has "something for everyone," with major retailers, niche vendors, entertainment and a candy kitchen. "From tools to bedding," she said, and online shops and home-built goods finding a place to pitch, too.
And the Gunsmoke room in Dodge House, modeled after the saloon in the television show, is a perfect place for a gun dealer to set up, she added.
Dodge City's new indoor football team, D.C. Law, will also make an appearance, as will its professional dance team, Unruh said.
This year, the event will be at Dodge House at 2408 W. Wyatt Earp Blvd. Unruh is still securing vendors, and many from last year will be returning.
Last year the event drew 7,000 visitors, she said, including some who came to Dodge City for the first time. The response from the public and vendors was strong, she added, and several vendors wanted to sign up for this year before they left the city.
"That told me I need to do it again," Unruh said.
Unruh made the case for Dodge City to vendors skeptical of putting up a booth in southwest Kansas, but "those that took the chance were glad they came."
"I think KaleidEscape Kansas raised the bar for the type of trade shows we can have here."
Aside from the change of venue, this year's event will be slightly different from last. Among the changes, Dodge House will be handling the food as part of its contract, and Unruh has invited the local community colleges to capitalize on the crowd of high schoolers and their families in town for the weekend.
Like last year, the show again plans to have hourly giveaways and prizes, Unruh said, one of the most popular aspects of the last show with both visitors and vendors.
The show will be accepting vendor applications until it runs out of space. Booths start at $225. Contact Kim Unruh at 620-227-3100 or at email@example.com for more information.
