Greensburg resident Matt Deighton is the main force behind a new book for children about what to do and what to expect in a tornado.

Anyone with a connection to Greensburg or who has ever experienced a tornado or other natural disaster should appreciate a book recently published by Greensburg resident Matt Deighton. He teamed up with artist Jason Nocera to create a kid-friendly book about that fateful day in May 2007.

Molly and the Tornado, available since last month, tells about the Greensburg twister from the perspective of Matt’s dog, Molly. It is a children’s book with high-quality illustrations. The story begins the afternoon of the tornado, continues through the actual tornado, and then follows the clean up of Greensburg by volunteers from across the nation.

Mr. Hunter, who owned the famous soda fountain that has been recreated today inside of the Kiowa County Historical Museum, provided my favorite line in the book:  “Well,” he said. “I can always rebuild the store and people can rebuild their homes. The important thing is that I see a lot of familiar faces here that are safe.”

Well do I remember the morning after the Greensburg tornado when I made my way to Haviland past the highway patrol blockade. I still recall the palpable sense of relief I experienced, even bordering on tears of joy at times, as I saw each co-worker or other person familiar to me through my work then as a case manager for the mental health center in Greensburg.

“This is the type of book that kids are going to read throughout the year at different times. I think it will be something they will keep next to their flashlights. It’s a comfort book,” said Matt.

To underscore the comfort factor, the back page of the book features “Molly’s Storm Safety Tips” for children.

Molly and the Tornado may be ordered by visiting and is also available via Varney’s bookstore in Manhattan.

Locally, the book may be purchased at Blue Moon Coffee House and Cathy's Closet.

Matt also discounts the book for church groups and other nonprofits to use as a fundraiser.
