  • This week is National Education Week and in appreciation of the yearly occasion Miller Elementary School is holding a series of events to show teacher appreciation. National Education Week is held each year to celebrate public education and teachers. In recognition of the occasion, the entire district held an event on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at the Civic Center. Food was served and 1,021 people attended. USD 443 employees and family members were invited. This is the ninth year the event has taken place. While most schools in the district are not celebrating the occasion individually, Miller's PTO has put together a series of teacher appreciation events for each day of the week. At assembly on Monday, teachers were treated to a video showcasing student appreciation for their work. Thanks will be given to support staff on Tuesday. Wednesday will include a soup lunch for the teachers. On Thursday, popcorn and soda will be offered to teachers and on Friday, a drawing will be held for various items including Dodge City Law tickets and restaurant gift certificates. “Education is the foundation of our community,” PTO Teacher Appreciation Chair Sarah Heeke said. “Without education we would have nothing, so these teachers and anyone working with education really are superheroes and deserve to be celebrated as such. It's nice that we have a week that celebrates education but really we need to celebrate our educators all year long.” New this year was the addition of an adopt-a-teacher program, where 18 local businesses display a Miller Elementary teacher's name on their building and accept thank-you notes. Businesses include Headcases Salon, Fischer Chiropractic, Dodge City Credit Union, Pick Chiropractic, Gibsons Pharmacy, iDocs of Dodge City, Renew Salon, Cummings Carousel, Tropical Island Tan and Fitness, Eclipse Salon, Salon Exotica, Jade Massage, Cup of Jones, Prime on the Nine and Papa John's Pizza. “We really wanted to expand the awareness of the greatness of our teachers beyond the walls of our schools and out into the community,” Heeke said. Heeke said she is most excited about the video presentation, where Miller students partnered with those from the broadcasting department at Dodge City High School. “We have done [the events] in the past but we have stepped it up a notch this year,” she said. “What I'm most excited about is the partnership with the broadcasting department. It's neat to get to partner with other schools.”
