  • Dodge City has had its share of visitors over the years, but this one comes from a more unusual location: Australia. Sam Harma is a senior policy officer to the minister for regional development lands for the government of Western Perth, Australia. Currently he is on a fact finding mission to Dodge City. His goal: to research agricultural innovation and the challenge of population decline in rural areas. “There are many similarities between western Kansas and western Australia,” Harma said. Both areas are agriculturally-driven economies and have a large beef industry. Both also experience the challenge of young people moving to more urban areas. Why choose Dodge over other rural areas? Harma said it was the area's implementation of central pivots, a popular irrigation method. “Center-pivot irrigation has helped increase food for the cattle industry,” he said. On Harma's agenda was a visit to the Winter Livestock Sale Barn, a tour of Roto Mix, a tour of Servi-Tech Laboratories and a meeting with the CEO of Crop Quest. Aside from the central pivots, Harma said he has been impressed with some of the other methods used by area farmers, including the use of recycled water facilities. “I think that kind of ingenuity and thinking outside the box is what's needed for rural communities in an increasingly globalized world,” he said. “Dodge is a dynamic, vibrant and innovative community that is facing the challenges of strong economic growth and certain rural challenges face on and seems to be succeeding in some of the challenges that are there,” he added.
