  • The Dodge City Red Demons had a little bit of the jitters Friday night in their first game of the season; but once they calmed down, they went on a torrid pace on the way to beating the Goddard Lions 60-45 at the DCHS Fieldhouse. The Red Demons missed their first eight shots, but went 20-of-31 the rest of the game to record the victory with the help of their seniors. Jace Larson scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Austin Weiser added 13 points and seven assists and Julian Sands scored nine points and had five boards in the win. "Our seniors showed that they have learned through the years and showed the other what they needed to do to win," said DCHS boys basketball head coach Dennis Hamilton. The players did a great job of playing hard and keeping their heads at the start. There were a lot of big shots hit by a number of our players to keep them at arms' length. We hit a lot of good shots." Larson said the seniors have taken the role of being the leaders on the court very seriously and showed by the hard work they played Friday night. "Coach Hamilton has said for us to play together, swing the ball and not be selfish," Larson said. "We played together since we were little kids. We knew we'd be asked to be the leaders and we're just trying to show everyone what is needed." The Red Demons made their last three baskets of the first quarter, including a banke three-pointer by Dayton McGroarty, to give the hosts an 11-9 lead after the stanza. Dodge City then used a 12-point run to close out the half to build a 34-18 lead at intermission. Dodge City scored 14 points off of turnovers and committed only two turnovers before halftime. Goddard used an eight-point run to get the margin down to single digits, but the Demons were able to push the lead back to 44-33 by the end of the third quarter and led by as many as 18 in the final stanza. Tucker Vang was the only Goddard player to score in double figures with 16.
