  • The underclassmen of the Dodge City Red Demons basketball team learned a hard lesson against the Manhattan Indians. Playing with primarily a sophomore group and two senior starters out with injuries, the Red Demons trailed by 25 midway in the first quarter and fell 55-37 to the Indians Friday night at the DCHS Fieldhouse. Despite the loss, DCHS boys basketball coach Dennis Hamilton said there were some silver linings after the horrid start the Demons had against Manhattan. "We had some young kids who were forced to grow up and got their feet wet for significant varsity minutes," Hamilton said. "Now they understand 6A varsity boys basketball, and it's different from what they've experienced. I thought most of them responded and played well at times." The Indians scored eight points in the first 30 seconds with Dodge City committing two turnovers. The Demons (1-1) finished the quarter with 11 turnovers that the Indians (2-0) turned into 13 points. Dodge City made only one field goal for the first 11 minutes of the game and trailed 28-3 before closing out with a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to 15 by intermission. The margin stayed within the 15-point range until the Indians closed out the third quarter with six points and then scored the first eight points of the final stanza for their biggest lead at 51-23. Jackson Oldham scored 13 points in the game to lead the Red Demons in scoring with Austin Weiser adding 12 in the losing cause. Payton Stephens led Manhattan with 13 points, Alex Stitt added 12 and Pierson McAtee 10 in the win. The Red Demons host Junction City today in a 2:30 p.m. contest at the Fieldhouse.
