The Dodge City Lady Demons dug down deep inside themselves late in the third quarter after the Junction City Lady Blue Jays went on a run for an eight-point lead. The Lady Demons didn't allow a field goal in the last 10 minutes on the way to completing a comeback with a 50-46 victory Saturday afternoon at the DCHS Fieldhouse. The other difference in the game was the ability to get the offensive rebounds at crunch time. Brianna Bradshaw hit what turned out to be the game-winning basket after missing a free throw with 45 seconds left in regulation and Baily Shelor scored on a put back after another missed free throw to seal the victory. Bradshaw said the memory of not playing well in a loss to Manhattan the night before was still on the Lady Demons' minds as they had to prepare quickly for Junction City. "It's hard to come up from that sort of loss," Bradshaw said. "You just have to keep pushing through to get a win." That depth also helped with leading scorer Katrina Roenfeldt had limited time on the court because of foul trouble. Bradshaw led the Lady Demons (2-1) in scoring with 12, Chandra Sain added nine, with Roenfeldt, Shelor and Jessie Harshberger score eight apiece. Fourteen of Dodge City final 16 points came off of second chance opportunities. "We talked about how hard it was to box out with the defense they were playing, so we crashed the boards and got second chance opportunities," said DCHS head coach Kelley Snodgrass. "The girls didn't give up and knocked them down. We didn't do well at the line, but they kept wanting to hustle. "The girls also buckled down and played disciplined defense. We can control defense; we can't always control if the ball goes through the hoop. I think we made things happen and got some things done in our transition defense." Kori Kamm led Junction City (1-2) with 18 points and 11 rebounds, but only scored one free throw in the final 10 minutes. A'Kia Fain added 11 for the Lady Jays. Dodge City scored their first 12 points off of Junction City turnovers, but the Lady Jays were able to get a run of their own to cut the deficit to 16-11. Junction City briefly led in the second quarter before a late Lady Demon run evened the score at intermission at 25-25. The two teams kept trading the lead in the third quarter until the Lady Jays used a 10-1 run to push ahead 42-34 with two minutes remaining in the stanza. Then the Lady Demons made their run. Harshberger made two baskets off offensive rebounds to cut the deficit to 42-38 by the end of the quarter; then had two free throws to open the final stanza before Bradshaw scored two more off an offensive rebound to tie the game. The Lady Demons will play their first road game Friday night against Goddard Eisenhower.
