Facing perhaps the shortest team the 4-2 St. John-Hudson Lady Tigers will face all year, the Lady Tigers came up against a scrappy and quick Cunningham Wildcats team, with the Tigers slowly pulling away in the first three quarters and winning the contest 43-28 Friday at Cunningham.
St. John's defense did a good job throughout the contest. The Lady Wildcat's defense wasn't too bad either with the Lady Tigers facing a decent Wildcat zone.
Still, St. John's big men were able to get their hands on the ball several times with Alexis Witt leading the way with three baskets, Teresa Christie got a basket and St. John guard Maddy Lippoldt also made one - the score at the end of one quarter with the Lady Tigers leading 10-4.
Both teams were having problems on offense with only nine points scored in the second quarter, five by the Tigers and four by the Wildcats. Two Tigers did all the scoring with Tia Smith getting a 3-pointer and Teresa Christie making one basket.
Most of Cunningham's scoring came from free throws.
The score after one half had the Tigers leading 15-8.
The St. John girls doubled their scoring in the third quarter making 15 points to Cunningham's seven. Four Tigers did the scoring with Teresa Christie and Witt each making two baskets. Sophomore Brandi Hanson shot a long 3-pointer left of the key and Tara Christie made a basket.
Going into the final quarter had the Tigers leading with a fairly comfortable margin 30-15.
St. John's lead stayed the same through the fourth quarter with Teresa Christie getting two baskets and one free throw. Witt made two baskets and Jessie Hanson and Ashlyn Fisher each made a basket.
St. John won the game 43-28.
St. John's lead would have been greater but missed free throws hurt the Tigers. On the other hand, much of Cunningham's scoring was from free throws.
Scoring for St. John: Witt 16, Teresa Christie 11, Lippoldt 4, Smith 3, Brandi Hanson 3, Jessica Hanson 2, Ashlyn Fisher 2, Tara Christie 2.
Free Throws made: 1/7 for 14.29 percent – Teresa Christie 1/3, Witt 0/2, Tara Christie 0/2.
Three point goals made: 2 (Smith 1, Brandi Hanson 1).
The Lady Tigers next game won't be until Tuesday, January 7th when they play at Kinsley.
