  • The Cargill meatpacking plant outside Dodge City will be back in operation Thursday and return to full production Friday despite a fire Monday night, said company spokesman Mike Martin.
About 1,000 employees were working on the second shift when a fire started in the ceiling in or near the killing floor area, Martin said. Despite the fire, the third shift shipping department was able to work.
All of the fire and burn damage appears to be isolated to the ceiling and part of a wall, Martin said. No equipment was damaged.
It took several hours for firefighters to extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Cargill plant is the second largest employer in Dodge City and the largest beef packing plant owned by Cargill Meat Solutions, the Wichita-based subsidiary of the privately-held company. The plant was established in 1981.
Cargill, the largest privately-held company in the U.S. based on revenue, produces more than one-fifth of the world's packaged beef products.
