  • For the first time, Dodge City Public Library is collecting blankets for those in need, and according to library Director Cathy Reeves, donations have been plentiful. “People have been generous, especially as the winter has gotten cold,” Reeves said. The library began collecting items in November and will continue collecting at least through January. The blankets will be given to United Methodist Mexican-American Ministries (UMMAM). Those wishing to donate blankets can either bring new ones or used blankets that are clean and gently used. There is a box in the library where donated blankets are being collected. According to Reeves, so far the library has collected two and a half boxes worth of blankets. The library has been collecting other items as well. For the second year, it is collecting scarves and mittens. These items were placed on a Christmas tree which stood in the library until New Year's Eve. The mittens, caps and scarves went to the Coats for Kids program, which the Credit Union of Dodge City sponsors. Jackets, sweaters and sweatshirts have also been collected. According to Reeves, the library staff decided to initiate the blanket donations program after seeing a need from UMMAM and the community. “It's one way that by working with the community we can give back to those in need,” Reeves said. To donate blankets, visit the library at 1001 North 2nd Ave. Those with questions can call the library at (620) 225 - 0248.
