The Dodge City Lady Demons played even for most of the game with the defending Western Athletic Conference champion Garden City Lady Buffaloes in their season opener Tuesday night at the DCHS Fieldhouse. Unfortunately, a late eight-point run in the third quarter and the ability to score off turnovers and second chance points were the culprits of the Lady Demons' 53-46 loss to Garden City. The Lady Buffaloes scored 20 points off of turnovers and 14 more on second chance points, but it was far from an easy victory and a bitter pill to swallow for the Lady Demons. Lady Demons' head coach Kelley Snodgrass felt like the Lady Demons (2-3) let another one win get away, but couldn't fault the effort of her team except for the final three minutes of the third quarter when Garden City was able to turn a one-point lead to as many as nine just before the final buzzer. "We had done a good job in playing defense and boxing out on the boards, but Garden won (Tuesday) night," Snodgrass said. "They got too many baskets on turnovers and too many rebounds for second chances. We have to do a better job to keep teams from getting transition baskets. "They are a veteran group. They have basically seniors on the court while we had mostly younger players. I was pleased with how hard the girls competed. They could have given up after our slow start, but they didn't give up." Chandra Sain and Katrina Roenfeldt scored 12 points apiece for Dodge City. Jaymie Bernbeck recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds for Garden City, while Jacksenie Tornero added 16 in the win. The Lady Demons scored eight points to end the first quarter and scored the first five points of the second quarter for a 13-9 lead, but Garden City (5-2) was able to regain the lead by intermission at 24-22. Dodge City was able to push the margin down to as small as four points in the final quarter before the Lady Buffaloes were able to clamp down on their defense in the final minute. The Lady Demons will face the Cimarron Lady Bluejays in a non-league matchup Friday night at United Wireless Arena.
