  • Lady Conqs wilt to Cloud offense

  • The Dodge City Lady Conquistadors may have picked the wrong night to have a cold shooting touch as they entered Jayhawk West play Saturday night at United Wireless Arena. The Lady Conquistadors made only 21 of their 65 shots and had some lapses in defense to lose 80-71 to the Cloud County Lady Thunderbirds. Lady Conqs women's basketball head coach Mark James said the team just didn't seem prepared for battle against one of the traditionally top squads in the conference. "We just didn't play well defensively," James said. "We knew what they were going to do and we worked in practice on what they were going to do. (Cloud) executed their offense very well. "The difference in the game, in my opinion was that we missed too many easier shots and they hardly missed any easy shots. We didn't put up too much resistance in the first half and did a little better job in the second half. We didn't come out with a sense of urgency until there were about six to seven minutes left in the game and it was too late at that point." Azaria Nave scored 20 points to lead the Lady Conqs (13-4, 0-1 Jayhawk West) in scoring. Kesha Buckner recorded another double-double with 13 points and 19 rebounds and Kelli Tolar added 12 in the loss. The Lady T-Birds (10-6, 1-0) were able to use their inside-outside game going in the game successfully against the Dodge City defense. Two Cloud players recorded double-doubles against the Lady Conqs: Jordyn Alexander (28 points and 15 rebounds) and Jayna Smith (20 points and 11 boards). Raneisha Duncan also scored in double figures for Cloud with 12 points. Cloud slowly built an 18-10 lead at the start of the game before 3-pointers by Tolar and Nave cut the margin down to two midway through the first half. Dodge City took its first lead on a breakaway basket after a steal by Nave with 6:23 left. A 10-point run by Cloud put them up by seven and led 42-37 at intermission. Alexander scored 20 points and grabbed nine boards in the first half for Cloud, while Nave led Dodge City with 12 points. Dodge City was 12-of-34 from the field before intermission, but made six of its 10 3-point attempts. Dodge City hit the first basket of the second half before Cloud went on an 11-point run to build the lead up to double digits at 53-39. The Lady T-Birds extended the lead to 68-49 with eight minutes left before the Lady Conqs made a final run, getting the deficit down to seven late in the game. The Lady Conqs' next game will be Wednesday night against Barton in Great Bend.
